PS3 outsells Wii and Xbox 360 ... in Australia
With 50,000 units sold since March, Sony is ecstatic to exclaim that PS3 is the top selling system in Australia and has been outselling the Wii and Xbox 360 every week. Michael "Wii is a bit pricey" Ephraim, managing director of Sony Australia says, "Based on GfK since launch, PS3 has been the number one next-gen console, outselling Wii and Xbox 360 every week, except for last week." Apparently the system is being touted as a Blu-ray player in electronics stores, so that whole lack of games thing isn't bothering the Aussies as much as it is the rest of the planet Earth. We don't have access to the GfK numbers, but the key thing to observe here is pacing, not actual numbers. Last week the Wii ended up being the fastest-selling console in Australia with the magic number of 100,000 unit. The Wii has sold twice as many units, but has been out since Dec. 7. The PS3 has been consistently selling more units each week since its March 23 launch (except for last week according to Ephraim). We'd call this a win for Sony, except if Australia's been having the same Wii supply problems as the rest of us, that might explain how the PS3 is outselling given its price tag. But we'll give Sony this one for now, a win through spin is still a win.

Great pic. Though seriously, those numbers sound really weird. The Wii has sold twice as many systems in Austrailia total, but the PS3 is outselling the Wii weekly since its launch 3 months ago, except for last week, and is being marketed primarily as Blu-ray with Benefits. So more Aussie's own a 360. More Aussie's own a Wii. But in the last 12 months, Sony has outsold the others weekly except for last week (and probably the next 30 weeks or something).
Not trying to dog on the PS3 or belittle its Aussie accomplishment, as outselling your competition for 11 straight weeks despite being much more expensive is an accomplishment, but you could probably make similar arguments for the 360 and Wii in Australia if you structure your wording as carefully as this.
samfish @ Jun 29th 2007 9:38AM
Another Australian story and you didn't write it like an Aussie nationalist would.
For shame, Joystiq. For shame...

OOOO big win for Sony!

The very main reason PS3 is winning in Oz because it has game region free where Australia are number one modchip-lover in the world.
Caey @ Jul 3rd 2007 6:25PM
Lets celebrate that, but hurry because it won't last long.
But Sony will still have the largest amount of console hardware earned money for some more weeks.
next news item: uganda likes the PS3 more!

@ Baby21
No,the reason PS3 is selling well in Australia is because Australia is about 5-6 years behind the rest of the modern world in terms of style, music, fashion etc, so they still think it is cool to like poopstation (sorry, PLAYstation)

excellent pic, but this story sounds kinda fishy
Z @ Jun 29th 2007 10:09AM
Um, but PS3 is not winning in Oz, so you need to check that again. The PS3 is still a distant 3rd. Doubt it changes.

PS3 outselling the others each week? Not what I've heard, now Sony have taken the gloves off expect the other manufacturs to quote some figures of their own.
megaStryke @ Jun 29th 2007 10:16AM
I'm not surprised. There's bound to some markets in which a generally less sought-after product is in high demand and vice-versa. A perfect example of this would be in Japan where the Xbox brand is all but ignored despite healthier sales elsewhere.
chris @ Jun 29th 2007 10:19AM
spamulike05, it's nice to see the brilliant American education system still works when it comes to teaching children about the world outside of their nation's borders. You're so amazing how you can look halfway around the world and judge the fashion sense of an entire country you probably couldn't find in an atlas. Oh and the people of Australia are so jealous of American music, they only have all these successful rock bands, really behind the times of such American emo musical visionaries like Fall Out Boy.
The PS3 is selling in Australia because people in Australia are generally insane when it comes to gaming purchases. Look at any sales charts and half of the games will be quiz and karaoke games, the other half being whatever big title launched that week in addition to Animal Crossing Wild World which is still in the top 10 every week even now. Oh the fact that there are hardly any Blu-ray or HD-DVD players on sale in Australia also helps the Sony cause a little, as if you want to watch HD movies you basically need to get a PS3.

There is a very scary trend rearing its ugly head this generation, when it comes to console sales distributions. Each major region is picking a separate favorite.
PS3 launched with a bang in PAL territories (Europe, Australia). PS3 sales remain relatively strong in these regions but pretty weak everywhere else.
360 launched strong in North America. The Sales are relatively good and stable here, but not so much in Japan or PAL territories.
Wii launched with much fanfare worldwide, but its getting its strongest sales in Japan, with slightly slower sales in america and even slower in the PAL territories.
Whats this going to do to the video game software market if trends continue in this fashion. In 3 years, there might be relatively few people in PAL territories with a 360, and PS3 reigns supreme. Meanwhile, not a PS3 to be found in america, its ruled by the 360. And in Japan, PS3 and 360 both have relatively low sales compared to the behemoth that is Wii. So will big japanese games only come out on Wii, big european games only come out on PS3, and big american games only come out on 360?
JodyAnthony @ Jun 29th 2007 10:27AM
shut the hell up with the tired anti-america tirade, chris. Did you ever stop to think spamulike05 is not a complete idiot because he is an american, but because his parents are first cousins?

If anything, I'd say that the 360 is, and will probably stay as, the best selling console down here.

vidGuy @ Jun 29th 2007 10:36AM
Of course the PS3 was the fastest selling console since March when it released. The Wii released in December and the 360 long before that, so the PS3 is largely on its own hype train around the release. All of the early adopters and BluRay fanatics have been nabbing it. It's good to see Sony is selling something somewhere, but I wouldn't expect it to be ahead in weekly sales for much longer.
Crono, I don't expect developers to target releases to regions, but I expect we will see a preference by region - specifically 360 in America and Wii in Japan, like you said. I'd be surprised if the PS3 is the generation dominator in any region, though.
Tony @ Jun 29th 2007 10:40AM
@chris - Do really think your comments about America that are incredibly shortsighted there are any less delusional? I know you're trying to make a point, but give me a break. Kye, Jonathan Tran, others:
PS3 is leading weekly sales since it came out in March. The Wii and the 360 are still ahead in TOTAL numbers because they came out months (or months and months) before. However, I imagine the numbers ARE inflated considering Sony is famous for using SHIPPED numbers as SOLD numbers.

Artr @ Jun 30th 2007 3:06AM
PS3 doesn't seem to be winning here at all... the fact is 1/3 of my friends have Wii's, supply also isn't a problem here, where you can just walk into a store and buy one off the shelf. (as a matter of fact some companies are giving them away if you spend more than $1000 something)
also based on those sales figures it hardly justifies anything. doing well in the first few months means nothing especially when there are still MORE of all the other consoles being used.
Zsavior @ Jun 29th 2007 11:29AM
GOd why are people arguing this story. /facepalm. people will wage war over anything.
WizarDru @ Jun 29th 2007 1:10PM
So the lesson here is that, if you arbitrarily choose the start and stop date, you can claim victory? I mean, the PS3 isn't exactly dying, but at the same time, choosing to start counting from March on doesn't really seem to say much other than Sony Australia is manipulating the data to get the best result. Claiming victory when your launch is fourth months later and after the Christmas holiday shopping season seems somewhat disingenuous.
BulletToothTony @ Jun 29th 2007 11:35AM
denial anyone?? WOW there must be at least 15 different reasons to why this "couldn't be true" from hmm this sounds fishy, to they bought it cause they don't have fashion.. and where do this numbers come from?? come on fanboys.. is it that hard to believe that the ps3 is selling.. is NOT a bad product.. it has amazing graphics.. is a reliable hardaware.. the list of games starting from next week is awesome.. why any good news and people bash like there's no tomorrow.. why can't anyone say.. well that's good.. it all has to be THAT CAN'T BE HAPPENING!! lol.. are you guys in denial?? are you really thart blind not to see that the ps3 is gonna take over soon?? don't be dumb and just save some money and buy a ps3. Honestly i didn't find hard at all to buy one.. seriously is only $599, are people in america really that broke??
Crono @ Jun 29th 2007 11:48AM
Somebody needs to pin "PS3's Law" that states that no matter what, in a discussion about PS3 or PS3 price, a Sony fanboy will bring up other people being "too poor" to buy it.
Wait, I think I just did. and BulletToothTony just envoked it.
Crono @ Jun 29th 2007 11:52AM
In addition, I seriously want to know how old BulletToothTony is, because no thinking rational adult can be that dilusional.
PS3 Gonna take over soon? Its over 5 million units behind the second place competitor (Wii), and every week Wii sells more units worldwide. The only way PS3 would take over "soon" is if everybody in the world decided that Wii really does just suck donkey balls, even though its tons of fun, and then everybody went out to buy a PS3, foregoing the 360 being 200 dollars cheaper for the same content.
WTF? Even if People decided not to buy wii, they'd all buy 360 instead, because anything coming to PS3 is coming or has already come to 360.
"Nuh uh! Not FF13 and MGS4!"
I think we'll all live.
sambo77777 @ Jun 29th 2007 11:56AM
@ 36...
no one doubts that they will sell a few of these things because of the fanboys and folk that are going with blueray. Regardless of what you say, the majority of people buy consoles to play games, and the xbox 360 is where it is at!!!!!!!!
JodyAnthony @ Jun 29th 2007 12:06PM
this was me reading bullettoothtonys comment:
"hmm..is it possible there is finally someone on joystiq that makes sense?. Oh, 'ps3 going to take over soon'...well i guess a little bit of trolling is ok...oh..playing the 'too poor' angle..looks like we have another asshat afoot"
Shagittarius @ Jun 29th 2007 12:06PM
Bullittoothtony is a little gung-ho, but he's correct, by the end of this generation the PS3 will be the market leader or at least tied with the other best selling console (360). The Wii will be an unpleasant memory by that time.
The Wii is like a fat chick, shes fun and amusing when no one else sees you with her but eventually even though she does anything you want you get tired of looking at her hideous polygons and search for a relationship with more substance.
Digi Smalls @ Jun 29th 2007 12:06PM
PS3 cheerleaders have totally given up their "it's about the GAMES, not the hardware" argument from their PS2 days and now all they talk about is how advanced and reliable the HARDWARE is. they'll just do whatever sony tells them to say...

It is always ironic when someone passes off basically every American alive as ignorant, uneducated, and prejudiced based on the comment of a 13 year old that was trying to be funny and get a rise out of ignorant, uneducated, and prejudiced Euro-dorks. Oh, sweet irony. You complete me.
Oooh. Let me try. America pwns earth. We f'ing rock. We can kick anyone's country's ass. You all eat up our entertainment and want to be more like us. There are two types of people in the world. Americans, and those that deep down wish they were. We pwn at almost every sport and will dominate soccer within 10 years. And most of the Euro-wienies that hate "America" are too young to remember the heavenly sight of American tanks liberating their nations and people from the evil Nazi's. Europe is a big collection of barely important countries that do 99% of the pissing and moaning in the world. You are only pissed because we could care less what you do or say, yet your lives are controlled and dominated by what we do and say. Just go ahead and pretend we are the reason that you aren't happy with you pathetic, miserable life. Listen to your media fill your minds with anti-American rhetoric and dribble. Maybe one day Europe will be powerful enough to do what America does now, just like you used to be. Remember when your nations were powerful and important. You colonized earth. Well, it is our turn now, bitches. Why don't you guys just sit there and bitch like you don't do that stuff anymore because you have evolved and not because we basically just don't let you. I guarantee you'd be all up in that oil shit if you could.
Boy that was fun. I sure hope I am able to piss some sensitive and insecure people off.
Peace, love, and all of the above. ;)

Not everything in america its easy, because many americans do not depend of their parents with money; like other country`s do, they have to work very hard to make enough money for rent, car, bills even with all that they are able to buy their console but with some sacrifice.
If iam wrong please correct me.......
vidGuy @ Jun 29th 2007 12:23PM
Sorry, taka-taka, that may be a description of some of the less-well-off Americans but it is far from being accurate about "many americans". I bought a Wii and 360 without sacrifice and still had no problem budgeting everything else. I've just found more value from the Wii60 than a PS3.
It is true, though, that the average American family carries several thousand dollars of credit card debt. Doesn't stop them from spending even more, though.

JodyAnthony @ Jun 29th 2007 12:33PM
I cant afford $600 for a PS3. I cant afford $400 for a 360. Hell, I had to budget to get the $250 for my wii. It's not because of credit card debt or anything (I dont have any credit cards, and refuse to get any) It's hospital bills from when I didn't have insurance, and paying my mortgage, and my car payment, and my car insurance, and for gas to get to and from work, and my utilities, and the fact that I'm getting married in November and can't afford to blow too much money on games.
However, even though I don't have them, I still think ps3 and 360 are awesome, from what I have played of them via friends/store kiosks.
